You're supposed to wear them so they're 1/4" above your eyebrows... dunno about most people, but I sweat a lot right along that space right below where the GUTR goes (yes, I own one and have used it several times). The other factor that nullifies it is when I wear my sunglasses as they touch my skin right along that same ridge and I've got sweat dripping everywhere. So I guess when I run in the mornings before the sun is up, the GUTR would work better than on the long runs on weekends when I need my shades.

That's a great suggestion, Tim. Few things better during a hot day on the trails than a nice, cold beverage. I would add to always be careful about safe water sources. Nothing will put a cramp in your hiking style than a run-in with "Beaver Fever."

Be sure to wipe off your containers, especially the part you'll be drinking from, and to wash/rinse any soda can tops, etc. with some purified water before drinking anything you've been soaking in back-country streams. Better safe than sorry!

Great post and lots of good guidance. I discover something new on every trip. I just got back from a weekend backpacking trip to Havasu Falls with a great idea that I "borrowed" from another backpacker. He had a netted laundry bag that he filled with drinks and dropped into the stream to keep them cold. I thought was a great idea and one that I will use for my next trip.

I have heard some people are applying Frontline Plus, or equivalent. If it is safe for our 4-legged friends, is it possible that it can be used on Humans too?

Notice:The risk of contacting lyme disease increases after 24-72 hours after the tick attaches. They could still be dangerous before 24 hours but your risk is greatly increased after 24... as far as the rubbing alcohol vs. vegetable oil, to each their own.

I personally don't trust some of the advice about tick bites, particularly that bit about bites not being dangerous until the tick has been dug in for 12 to 24 hours (or whatever number they give). I've known several people who found the bullseye bruise on themselves without having left a tick on that long. Best to take of it as soon as you feel one crawling. Also disagree with the thing about killing them with rubbing alcohol, ticks are pretty tough and may climb right out of that. Smashing is about the only guaranteed way to kill them off. Although I've had some luck dropping them in a glass of cooking oil, very few of them get out of that.

We saw a ton of these this weekend while hiking in the Cleveland National Forest just south of Julian, CA. My fellow hiker and I walked about 20 feet on the trail and brushed against one bush. We had 7 on our clothes between us in the first minute.

We were pretty vigilant with "Tick Checks" for the rest of the day and found a total of about 30 on us at various times. They seemed to be active most in the cooler morning hours, but that was when we were doing the most bushwhacking.

Nice article!

These are good tips for eating out. I used to split my order with my daughter but now that she is off to college I can't do that. I have now taken to ordering off the kids menu if they will let me despite feeling a little silly.

This is similar to what I used to do.. Eat half as much as you normally would and then stop... You'll still feel pretty hungry afterwards for the first fee weeks but afterwards your stomach will shrink a bit and it WILL take less food to make you feel full... Going forward you'll eat less and stop sooner when eating consuming less calories.. It works! It's also nice that you don't have to deny yourself occasional pleasures like beer or ice cream so long as when it comes to the big picture you're eating considerably less... A calorie is a calorie is a calorie..
Also helps to eat foods that make you feel full longer... Beans, oatmeal, etc

I love zucchini on the campfire. I prepare it with olive oil, balsamac vinegar, and garlic powder. Yum! Peppers and asparagus are great this way too.

I found your blog via Log My Loss. I've enjoyed what you've written so far and identify with the wish to be fit for all the outdoor activities I love. How are you doing with your goals these days?
